“All good books are alike in that they are truer than if they had really happened and after you are finished reading one you will feel that all that happened to you and afterwards it all belongs to you: the good and the bad, the ecstasy, the remorse and sorrow, the people and the places and how the weather was. If you can get so that you can give that to people, then you are a writer.”

Random acts of kindess

Yesterday, my husband and I were sitting in a beautiful park near our house. It was late in the evening, around eight, and in this part of the world there was still a lot of day light at the time. We were seated near a lovely little stream and in it were swimming two speckled brown ducks. It was very picturesque and quiet.

After a while of admiring the view, I pulled out my camera and started taking a few photographs. A few shots later I managed to coax my husband into getting into the frame as well.

Now since we are in a new country and have absolutely no friends here, it is quite difficult to get a photograph of the two of us together, especially since the both of us dislike pestering random strangers into clicking snaps. So while I was being content just clicking his picture, a group of 3 people walked by and one of them, out of the blue, walked up to me, smiled and said, "How about a picture of the both of you together?"

I was surprised. A stranger like so many others we see each day was just walking by with his friends. He saw a lonely couple, sensed the situation and offered to click a snap of us together. What did he get out of it ? Nothing. Well, at least absolutely nothing material. He might have got some happiness from seeing my super happy smile, or from the fact that we thanked him several times, but nothing else.

I can sometimes sense, in reflective moments, when I relive all the wonderful experiences of my life, all of humanity to be part of a single large ocean. A warm understanding connecting us all together, irrespective of age, color, religion and language. Here and there are little drops of goodness, kind words, charitable actions, encouraging looks and warm hugs arising out of a common desire of goodness. In random places in unexpected moments, people going a little out of their busy lives to put a cheer on another person's face.

All it takes sometimes is a little courage on your part to reach out to another human being.

So the next time you pass by someone and are met with a cold face, try smiling at them. You can take the first step, the other person might just be shy. Next time you see someone walking in the rain, go a few blocks with them sharing your umbrella. Let the world call you a good two shoes, let them laugh or think you weird, but you can take happiness from the single idea that you might just have by your little action significantly touched another person's life.

One single drop makes a significant ripple many times wider than its own tiny dimensions, just think what will happen if we all together make it rain!
